So I haven't really admitted this to many people. Like three people. But oh well, here it goes... Considering the nearly under-exaggerated statement that 'All of my friends are getting married', I was feeling quite lonely about a week ago. It's been almost two years since I was with my ex-boyfriend and I hadn't even been on a date in months. I had heard of people finding others on online dating sites, but I had never really trusted them (also I was quite convinced of their well-merited stigma of 'creepy'). So I gave into my curiosity--after much procrastination and surprisingly little thought--and signed up for a website that will go unnamed. *coughs* Plenty of Fish... Excuse me, sorry.
At first, I was excited. I put up some cute pictures of me and wrote some tidbits about myself and waited. It took only about 20-30 minutes before I got my first message. It was from a skinny fellow who... looked like he would have slit a stranger's throat with creepy curved dagger and then posed in his skinny jeans with the body. Okay, that's a little dramatic. But not by much.
His basic message was something like this: "Hey, I think you're really cute. Let's [do laundry]."
To which I responded with the following message:
"Thank you for the compliment, it's very flattering. However, I am looking for a serious, non-physical relationship. Good luck in your future romantic endeavors."
Several of the messages that followed over the next few days were similar. However, I was also showered with flattering compliments by less creepy and even some attractive men, which really boosted my confidence and faith in finding someone to date.
Then, one message stated something like this:
"Hey, I have this problem, blah, blah, blah--girl scarred me--blah, blah, blah--self-conscious. Could I send you a picture of [the Netherlands]? It would make me feel a lot better about my [picture taking]."
Disturbing...
Needless to say, I only lasted about a week before I deleted my account... I'd rather have face-to-face interaction where creeps have a harder time getting away with being creepy to my face.
